Attorney Tatiauna Holland Awarded DTLA 2020 John Howie Award for Advocacy During the George Floyd Protests
On October 20, 2020 Managing Attorney Tatiauna Holland was received the Dallas Trial Lawyers Association’s 2020 John Howie Award along with attorneys Daniel Dailey, George Oginni, Daryl K. Washington, Adam Greenfield, Michelle Simpson Tuegel, Morgan McPheeters, and Jessica Foster, for their successful lawsuit against the City of Dallas regarding the police department’s use of excessive force against peaceful protestors during the George Floyd protests.
About John Howie
John Howie was a renowned Dallas trial lawyer and former president of the Dallas Trial Lawyers Association.
The John Howie award is given to attorneys, and their clients, who face adversity during their pursuit of justice in a specific case.
When presented the award the recipients were told:
“ Congrats on receiving the most prestigious award DTLA has. You folks are young, so you weren’t blessed to know John Howie, but he would be so proud of you.
John was about service from that of a Navy pilot to a dedicated, tireless tiral lawyer who fought for justice for his clients over and over again.
In short, this is a big deal and you should be deservedly proud.”
Legal Action During the George Floyd Protests in Dallas Texas
On June 11, 2020 a federal judge granted a Motion for Preliminary Injunction prohibiting the City of Dallas and the Dallas Police Department from using less than lethal projectiles also called rubber bullets or wooden bullets against peaceful protestors or as a means of crowd control.
The injunction was a fundamental part of former Police Chief Renee Hall’s report of the department’s handling of the protests that found planning and communication problems among police officers. The report also proposed changes in who can authorize use of tear gas, training for mass arrests and ensuring the use of police body cameras.
A copy of the Motion for Preliminary Injunction can be found here.
