Worried About ICE Raids in Houston?

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported Monday that 680 people were undocumented immigrants were arrested in the United States. Approximately 51 of the individuals arrested resided in San Antonio, Texas and surrounding areas.

While DHS and the White House has reported that the raids only targeted "the really bad ones", which presumably means individuals convicted of serious crimes or suspected gang members, these raids have made individuals living in Houston, Conroe, The Woodlands, Pearland, and surrounding areas particularly nervous.

The following article briefly addresses what to do if you or your loved one if encountered by ICE or placed in removal proceedings.

What Should I do if Encountered by ICE Officials

If you or your loved one is approached or encountered by ICE officials, it is important to remember the following things:

  1. Memorize the numbers of a close family or attorney.

  2. Demand to speak with your attorney and do not make any statements without your attorney present.

  3. Do not sign ANY documentation without first seeking an attorney's advice.

  4. Keep any approved immigration petitions or documents (i.e. I-130 approval notice, I-485 receipt notice, etc.) on your person when traveling.

  5. Travel with green card or naturalization certificate. (While this may particularly intrusive, this can be suitable as an extra precaution.)

What If I am Undocumented or in the US Unlawfully?

If you or your loved one is living in the U.S. unlawfully, please seek advice from an experienced immigration attorney immediately. Often, we take advice from friends and relatives; however, this can lead to incorrect information.

An experienced immigration attorney has the knowledge and skill to determine what immigration relief you qualify, if any. Just because you did not qualify for relief in the past, this does not mean immigration laws have not changed or new laws have not been established.
